Ambient Lighting Ideas for Bedrooms
Bedroom lighting has to help you find a missing sock, read comfortably and then persuade the room that the day is finished. One brightness level cannot do all three well.

Plan for arrival, tasks and rest
Use brighter general light while dressing or cleaning, focused light for reading and low ambient light before sleep. Separate controls let you change the mood without changing the whole room.
Put bedside light within easy reach
The switch should be reachable from bed and the shade should hide the bulb from your resting position. Separate lamps let two people control their own sides.
Bounce light off walls
A lamp near a pale wall can produce a broad, soft glow. Lighting a curtain or textured surface adds depth, but keep fixtures at the clearances specified by their manufacturer.
Keep small bedrooms visually quiet
Choose compact lamps that leave useful nightstand space. Control excess cable safely, keep its route away from feet and avoid too many tiny decorative sources competing for attention.
